Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity, an affordable housing developer headquartered in Chatham County, is one of the oldest Habitat affiliate chapters, having started its operations in 1983, a mere seven years after the organization’s founding. Since then, the non-profit has completed the rehabilitation and the construction of 124 homes, 29 of which are owned outright by partner families. An active advocate for Chatham County’s economically disadvantaged residents, Habitat leverages shelter as a catalyst to transform their condition. Not only is decent shelter a critical element of improved quality of life, but it is also a strategic lever in the larger community ecosystem. Forming these linkages between the family, other non-profits, the public sector, and private individuals, facilitates improved communications; fosters critical collaborative relationships; and unlocks the economic assets essential to individual empowerment.
