The Clean Tech Competition is designed to foster a deeper understanding of science and technology, recognize outstanding talent, and prepare the next generation of globally competitive innovators. The Clean Tech Competition will provide students with opportunities to work and think like scientists, as they wrestle with real world problems. Two years ago in a speech before the National Academy of Sciences, President Obama set a goal to move American students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math over the next decade. The President challenged young people "to create and build and invent - to be makers of things, not just consumers of things." The Clean Tech Competition allows us to align efforts with our Chinese colleagues in science education, and work together to motivate young people in both countries to build, invent, and prepare for the challenges of our technological 21st century. With this new signature philanthropy program, developed in partnership with the National Science Teachers Association, Applied Materials intends to challenge young people to become the problem solvers and leaders that we will need in the future. We believe that the young people in our communities have the potential to develop the next great technological breakthroughs. With the Clean Tech Competition, we hope to ignite their interest, engage their creativity, and motivate them to succeed.
