Leonard came into the custody of the Union County (Ohio) Humane Society. While at the Humane Society Leonard was evaluated to be placed for adoption. Unfortunately, Leonard possessed a strong will and a high ball drive. Those characteristics made Leonard unadoptable and he would therefore have to be euthanized. Fortunately, UCHS recognized those traits as being the traits needed for Law Enforcement work and contacted Storm Dog Tactical. Storm Dog Tactical evaluated Leonard for Police Work and found him to have exactly what it takes to be an outstanding Narcotics Detecting K9. Storm Dog Tactical trained Leonard for narcotics detection and Clay Township Police, Genoa Ohio adopted Leonard. On 05-16-2017 Detective Leonard passed certification and became the First Police K9 Pit Bull in the state of Ohio. Bringing Leonard to our Police Department was made possible by our friends at, The Genoa Mini Mart, Yackee Electric Service, and Owens Ark Veterinary clinic. Officer William Billy Hetrick was a 4 year veteran of the Clay Township Police Department. Officer Hetrick was killed in the line of duty on July 10th 2000, due to an automobile accident. Officer Hetrick's dedicated service and ultimate sacrifice was honored in 2014. On February 19th 2014, Ohio State Senator Randy Gardner and Ohio State Representative Chris Redfern, sponsored legislation to have a portion of State Route 51 renamed after Officer Hetrick. The amendment to House Bill 19 passed through legislation, and was officially signed into law by Governor John Kasich on March 4th 2014. State Route 51 passing through Clay Township, is now called the Officer William J. Hetrick Memorial Highway. Established in 1840, Clay Township is located in western Ottawa County and contains 26.4 square miles. It adjoins Allen Township on the north, Wood County to the west, Sandusky County and Harris Township in Ottawa County to the south, Benton and Harris Townships to the east.
