Challah for Hunger was founded in response to the humanitarian crisis in Darfur. Through the simple act of baking, students at Scripps began to raise awareness and proceeds for the victims of genocide over four years ago. Claremont Challah continues to combine our passion for baking and social justice, focusing on a specific social justice issue in the Los Angeles Area each semester. We believe there is much Tikkun Olam—“repairing the world”—to be done in our own back yard. Structural inequality, discrimination, racism and poverty still plague out society, impeding out vision of social, racial and economic justice. Every Thursday evening and Friday morning we sell freshly baked challah to students at the Claremont Colleges, donating 100% of our profits to the charities of our choice. For example, in the 2018-2019 school year, we donated over 5,000 dollars to the Inland Empire Food Bank. If you are a student looking to enhance both the Claremont Colleges and greater LA community, don't hesitate to reach out.
