The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for LGBTQ+ young people. The organization works to save young lives by providing support through free and confidential suicide prevention and crisis intervention programs on platforms where young people spend their time: our 24/7 phone lifeline, chat, text and soon-to-come integrations with social media platforms. We also run TrevorSpace, the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth, and operate innovative education, research, and advocacy programs. Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work. Lambda Legal has been making the case for equality on behalf of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV throughout the United States for more than 35 years. Our strategy combines groundbreaking work in the courts with innovative education and public policy work to change the hearts and minds of the public — and to teach people how to make sure that LGBT civil rights are respected. Through our offices in New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles, we average over 60 cases at any given time, tackling a range of issues including marriage, relationships and parenting; employment discrimination; HIV; health care; transgender rights; youth issues; and the battle for fair courts. Our mission is to protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ+) youth from the harm of homelessness, and to support them in becoming safe and independent as they move from adolescence to adulthood. As the visibility of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ+) people grows in our society, more and more LGBTQ+ teens are finding the courage to come out of the closet. Tragically, as many as 25% of these teens are rejected by their families, and many end up homeless on the streets. Homeless LGBTQ+ teens are more likely than straight homeless teens to be subjected to violence on the streets, and in the homeless shelter system. They suffer from inordinate rates of mental illness, trauma, HIV infection and substance abuse. The Ali Forney Center (AFC) was started in June of 2002 in response to the lack of safe shelter for LGBTQ+ youth in New York City. We are committed to providing these young people with safe, dignified, nurturing environments where their needs can be met, and where they can begin to put their lives back together. AFC is dedicated to promoting awareness of the plight of homeless LGBTQ+ youth in the United States with the goal of generating responses on local and national levels from government funders, foundations, and the LGBTQ+ community.
