Citiznz (launching in July at Citiznz.com) is Subscriber-Controlled News Media. Our mission is to help our readers, and the world, to rediscover common ground – through honesty in news coverage and mutual respect. Citiznz communities can define and express themselves, as well as determine their own membership, in any way they like. A community may be as simple as a few beer enthusiasts that like to get together to compare IBUs on a Friday night. However, it is the conversations themselves that are the most important to us. Beer or no beer. As a society, we seem to have a lot of trouble these days talking to each other: particularly when we are coming from very different viewpoints. But surely, if there is any one thing that characterizes a healthy society, it is that people within them tend to engage in an overflow of meaningful conversations. Whether the talk is about big problems, small problems, or if people are just being human together, society requires communication. Open, honest communication. We can hardly begin to even think about how to make things better in our institutions, our culture, and our own lives if we avoid or simply don’t mention problems. To make things better, we have to talk about them.
