New Zealand Opera is the national opera company of Aotearoa. We are continually building on a firm foundation of artistic achievement, promotion of talent, and imaginative efforts to expand opera audiences.
Our repertoire has included dazzling productions of ever-popular operas such as Madama Butterfly, La Bohème, The Marriage of Figaro and Tosca as well as bold productions of new works like Jenny McLeod's Hohepa. The scale and style of our productions has spanned a wide range from quickfire comedies like Don Pasquale to epic spectacles like Aida. Partnerships with other arts organisations are a feature of our seasons: NZ Opera works regularly with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington and on occasion with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. A vital part of all our main stage productions is the Freemasons NZ OPERA Chorus in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington. These accomplished performers also sing at functions and special events. Part of our mission is to foster talent and this is achieved through the company's Internship Programme. Aspiring singers, designers and opera enthusiasts of school age are the target of NZ Opera's education Outreach Programme.
The team at NZ Opera are passionate about our art form. At the heart of it all is our belief in the ability of opera to tell human stories with power and beauty.
