Cie 13 vzw Information

ROSA MEI is artistic director of Cie 13, an experimental dance troupe based in Antwerp, Belgium. She has created over 30 works for the stage which have been presented in 17 countries throughout the world. Her intricate pieces are bizarre tapestries of mathematically layered movement and surrealist symbolism. She received her Masters in Dance from the University of Michigan and was a gold and silver medalist in Chinese martial arts, a member of the US wushu team and a black belt in aikido. Her work is supported by the European Cultural Foundation, the Flemish Ministry of Culture, City of Antwerp and the Nordic Cultural Council.. Her company Cie 13 is known for its quirky, movement-based works in traditional and non-traditional theater settings –from an elevator factory in Antwerpen to a hockey stadium in Prague to the National Theater of Romania. Based in Antwerpen, Belgium, Cie 13 often collaborates with Antwerpen Open to present dance theater works (Radio Isotope, Black Monk, Droomspel R.E.M.) in unusual locations. Cie 13 has performed internationally in Europe (Belgium, France, Scotland, the Czech Republic, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Croatia and Turkey), North and South America (New York and Guatemala) and China. The Cie 13 trademark diversity in movement (ballet dancers, poppers, bboys and martial artists) and music (opera, beatbox, rap, percussion and jazz instrumentals) makes it unique in the international theater scene. Awarded a prestigious European Cultural Foundation Grant in 2005 and 2008, Cie 13 is supported by the Flemish Cultural Ministry of the City of Antwerpen and has been widely praised for its innovative direction and virtuostic performers. Recent collaborations include works with Turkish artists for the 0090 Festival, a new creation with the Beijing Modern Dance Co. for the 2010 Europalia Festival, and a Scandanavian tour of her martial arts ballet Havamal, sponsored by the Nordic Culture Fund.
