CHEWV has been the essential force behind every homeschool law in WV. Having our Board and many, many parents throughout the years spending countless hours being our own lobbyists, has resulted in a fairly lenient homeschool law in WV that is enjoyed by all today. The WV government school system has great influence at the state capitol. Although most younger home educators are unaware of it, during the past three decades, CHEWV has addressed frequent and occasionally serious threats to West Virginia's homeschooling and/or parental freedoms. It has taken remarkable favor on God's part and concerted vigilance on our part to monitor and defeat legislation that could potentially weaken the homeschool law. Protecting our educational choice is so critical that CHEWV pays a registered lobbyist at the Capitol to actively review bills, dialogue with education committee members in both houses, and attend committee meetings not only during the regular 60-day Legislature but at all special sessions as well. His invaluable oversight enables CHEWV to serve and defend our member families - and indeed all families who reside in our state and educate their children at home. Additionally, where possible, CHEWV's Board has endeavored to maintain and develop beneficial relationships with successive leaders within the WV State Board of Education. We have also worked tirelessly to provide practical, informative resources to Board of Ed superintendents and attendance directors in all 55 WV counties. Occasionally this has meant head-on confrontations with a handful of bureaucrats who have misinterpreted or misrepresented the law to confused or inexperienced homeschoolers. We have testified in court in behalf of children whose home education future was threatened. We've been involved with homicide and divorce cases surrounding homeschooled children.
