Membrane proteins represent 60% of all therapeutic targets. In Drug Discovery, these complex proteins are often incorrectly produced, resulting in an alteration of their natural conditions and properties. Overcoming this problem is the key to success in the development of reliable and efficient drugs, vaccines and antibodies. Classical approaches consist in using chemical compounds off the shelf to extract membrane proteins from the cells. This process is generally harsh for the protein and results in an alteration of their structure and function. Thus the lack of innovation in the field of reagent research for the validation of pharmaceutical targets now represents a major social and economic stakes for human and animal health. To address this challenge, CHEM2STAB - joint research laboratory created by CALIXAR and the University of Avignon - develops new molecules able to extract, stabilize and/or promote the crystallization of membrane proteins allowing the preservation of their structure and function. The activities of CHEM2STAB around membrane proteins include the following major areas: the research and development of new detergents and surfactants, the discovery of new additives for crystallization, the biochemical validation of these compounds as well as their commercialization to pharmaceutical & biotech companies and also academic groups.
