The SoA is a trade union for all types of writers, illustrators and literary translators, at all stages of their careers. We have been advising individuals and speaking out for the profession for more than a century. Member services include the confidential, individual vetting of contracts, and help with professional queries and collective action on issues that matter to authors. In addition, the SoA organises a calendar of events, publishes a quarterly magazine, The Author, maintains a database of members' specialisations, and administers a wide range of grants and prizes such as the Authors’ Foundation, one of the few bodies making grants to help with works in progress for established writers.

New Writing North supports writing and reading in the North of England. We commission new work, create development opportunities, nurture talent and make connections.

The Literary Consultancy is the UK's first and leading editorial and manuscript assessment service, working nationally and internationally since 1996. TLC provides professional feedback to writers at all levels, from aspiring to professional, from a team of 90 editors, covering fiction, non-fiction, memoir, short stories, poetry and scripts. We also refer to trusted, qualified copy-editors, proofreaders and ghostwriters on a case by case basis. TLC's mentoring scheme, Chapter and Verse, supports writers toward completing ongoing book-length projects. We also host literary events for writers at our base, the world-renowned Free Word Centre in London, and an annual overseas writing retreat.
