Chaney Excavating is a fourth generation company with a long history of excavating work. Arthur Chaney and his brother Gary started the company around 1912. The first summer they used draft horses and a stump pulling machine to remove over 2500 stumps. In the 1920's Arthur leased 40 teams of horses that pulled 1 yard gravity dump boxes to move dirt and build roads. They were loaded by a steam powered excavator. They built parts of M-37 between Newaygo and White Cloud as well as parts of Connonsburg Road and Honey Creek Road.
