Mitochondria are the cell’s powerhouses, vital for metabolism and energy production. Their decline with age is a key hallmark of aging, contributing to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, and metabolic disorders. In older cells, mitochondria become deformed and are less capable of producing energy. While lifestyle interventions like caloric restriction and resistance training can modestly slow this decline, no treatment has been shown to truly restore mitochondrial function. Our scientific co-founders and collaborators at UCSF and Stanford have discovered a novel mitochondrial biology that plays a central role in both neurodegeneration and metabolism. In partnership with them, we are developing an oral pill that directly targets this new mechanism. The molecule has demonstrated strong benefits in experimental models of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other forms of neurodegeneration, and has been shown to extend lifespan across multiple species. Remarkably, old animals treated with the drug candidate exhibit measurable improvements in physical performance and functional vitality. We are advancing a new frontier in mitochondrial science with the potential to transform the treatment of age-related diseases. Our next focus is to bring this breakthrough into clinical development for neurodegenerative disorders such as frontotemporal dementia (FTD), where no effective therapies exist today. With clinical success, we will expand to additional diseases of aging and realize our mission to advance the science of healthy longevity.
