Based in the township of Khayelitsha, COSAT is a non-fee paying high school which helps underprivileged students achieve academic success in the fields of science, mathematics, and information technology. Only offering grades 10-12, the school invites pupils from neighboring secondary institutions who have performed well in mathematics to attend their intensive program. COSAT has teamed up with local NGOs to better assist the most impoverished and vulnerable students. It is listed as a STEM school (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths Focus School) by the Western Cape Education Department, and is one of only four in the Western Cape. COSAT does not offer a subject choice, with the following subjects all being compulsory parts of the curriculum: requisite languages, mathematics, science, biology, and computer studies. Students are also encouraged to excel at extracurricular academic activities, such as the Science Expo robotics tournaments, where COSAT students have won awards in the past. The school is one of only four STEM schools in the province, and the only of its kind which is township-based. It does not charge fees, and offers top-quality education & opportunities for excellence in Science, Engineering, Mathematics & Technology.
