CentralNic was founded in 1995 with the vision of bringing more choice and competition into the domain name marketplace. When Nominet launched the .CO.UK domain for the UK in that year, the original price was to be about £150. However, once Nomination (CentralNic's predecessor) launched the UK.COM registry, charging only £32.50 per year, the effect of the additional competition reduced the price of domain name registrations in the UK, to the point where the UK is now one of the biggest marketplaces for domain names in the world, disproportionate to its population.
