Carolina Coin LLC Information

Kathy Tapia has been owner of Carolina Coin since 2004, but it is a family business with a much longer history. In 1976, my father and my uncle opened Carolina Coin in Columbia, SC. It was a wonderful little coin shop for a number of years until the gold and silver rush of 1980. After that brief but very active time in 1980, Carolina Coin was renamed Carolina Gold and Silver and added wholesale jewlery and precous metals to our business. We also continued to handle coin collections and bulk metals. Because it was a family business, Kathy has been involved in everything from wholesale to retail to testing scrap metals since middle school, and came to work full time at Carolina Gold and Silver in 1993. In 1998, one of our customers told us we just had to check out this great web site where people were buying and selling rare coins like crazy. We logged in and fell in love with eBay. Eventually, we were listing 100 items a day, completing over 100,000 auctions and amassing a feedback rating of over 36,000 positives. In 2004, the founders decided to retire and have some much earned rest. Kathy bought the coin business, restored the name Carolina Coin and took the business 100% online. Other family members bought the fine jewelry segment of the business. In 2008 the precious metals markets began to really surge in activity. Since then, Carolina Coin has been very focused on servicing our precious metals customers as well as coin collectors. We travel the Carolinas every day visiting coin shops, pawn shops and gold buyers collecting gold and silver of all types from everywhere. I can not think of anything I would rather be doing!
