CanCode Communities Information

CanCode Communities is a nonprofit workforce development organization focused on expanding access to technology careers and digital economic opportunity. Founded in New York’s Capital Region, CanCode has grown to deliver programming across New York and Massachusetts, with trainees participating in programs in 10 states. The organization works to shift mindsets about who can succeed in technology while building inclusive pathways into the rapidly growing tech and AI-enabled workforce. Our sectoral training model combines industry-aligned technical training with intensive wraparound support to help individuals transition into higher-wage careers. Programs span beginner digital literacy through advanced technology training in areas such as software development, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. Training is designed with employer input and delivered in partnership with community colleges, workforce systems, and regional employers to ensure alignment with labor market demand. A defining feature of the CanCode model is our focus on removing barriers to participation. Many of the individuals we serve face significant obstacles to accessing technology careers, including limited access to devices, connectivity, or prior exposure to digital tools. To address these challenges, we provide laptops, individualized success coaching, and career navigation support to help participants complete training and secure employment. Since launching in 2016, CanCode Communities has trained thousands of individuals across New York and Massachusetts, with trainees now participating in programs in 10 states. More than 80 percent of participants come from historically underrepresented populations, including women, immigrants and refugees, veterans, and individuals from low-income communities.
