For 40 years, Camp Sunshine has provided hope, joy and community through unique experiences for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. At our pristine campus on Sebago Lake in Maine, more than 60,000 children, siblings, parents, and caregivers from all 50 states and 27 countries have come together for fun-filled, year-round sessions with families just like theirs. And, thanks to the incredible support of donors and volunteers, our programs are 100% free. Camp Sunshine is where families can focus on recharging, together, in a safe space with medical support available. Camp Sunshine is where families discover a community who understands. Camps For Kids works to ensure that no Kansas City area child will be turned away from summer camp because of low income or physical or developmental disability. The organization was founded by Marjorie Powell Allen in 1981 after the Federal government discontinued a program providing summer camp to children with disabilities or financial need at no cost to their families.
It is still true today that it is difficult for many families with children who have physical/developmental issues or who are low-income to afford the cost of camp. Camps For Kids believes that camp offers opportunities for children to enjoy a sense of independence, meet and make new friends, and experience fellowship and a feeling of community through the unique and potentially life-changing experience of summer camp.
Camps in the network have a specific focus including blood disorders, autism spectrum disorders, spina bifida, cancer, foster care children, bereavement therapy, vision impairments, developmental challenges, and congenital heart disease. Several camps provide access to the environment, and the arts and sciences to underprivileged children and youth. Many camps have small staffs and utilize volunteers to conduct their activities. Their focus is on providing an outstanding camping experience for the children. Few have dedicated personnel with enough time to raise the needed funds to support the camp’s programs. The support of Camps For Kids is critical to their continued operation and success.
“Without the support of Camps for Kids and the matching fund, CHD Families would be unable to provide a free medically supervised summer camp for kids with Congenital Heart Defects.” -director, Camp Systole.
Camp Joy is more than just a retreat from everyday pressures. It's a place specially designed for spiritual growth. Our goal is to see people of all ages grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. We see our camp as a kind of greenhouse—an environment specially designed to nurture spiritual growth. For the brief time you’re here, we work to filter out everyday pressures and distractions, giving you a time to rest and refocus.
Camp Joy, located in Whitewater, Wisconsin, is a year-round ministry that offers a multitude of camps, conferences, online bible study, and retreats for all ages and is dedicated to serving as an extension of local churches.
Our camp motto is “Fun with a Purpose,” and it’s not hard to have fun in an outstanding facility that offers over 65 different recreational activities on 65 acres and a 650-acre lake. We hope you’ll enjoy our comfortable, home-like accommodations. Our camp verse teaches believers to “grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). When a believer comes to know the Lord better through His Word, he finds himself joyfully responding with a desire to please his Savior, a response that both glorifies and gladdens Him. Because of our desire to share this wonderful relationship with others, each camp’s schedule reserves daily quiet time for our guests to spend with God in His Word, and we select speakers who carefully study the Bible to proclaim the truths found there.
