CAMERAS FOR KIDS FOUNDATION, INC. Information

A 501c3 nonprofit organization providing cameras and instruction to underprivileged children living in foster facilities; offering them hope, self esteem and a skill set for a productive future. Teens that have histories of abuse, abandonment and/or severe neglect, are at increased risk of emotional disturbances, delayed social development and anti-social behavior. For many, their fragmented childhoods, characterized by trauma early in life have been compounded by multiple unsuccessful relationships in foster homes, treatment centers, and schools. Photography is an effective tool in igniting children's imagination and building self-esteem. It can help with healing as well as give children a unique artistic voice. Betsey Chesler, a self taught Fine Art Photographer and Photojournalist who has exhibited her works in Galleries throughout the U.S, founded Cameras For Kids Foundation, Inc. a non-profit organization to allow her to utilize her gift of art and photography, while establishing a higher level of social awareness to the needs of underprivileged teens, and ultimately create a positive artistic outlet and skill set for these children. Cameras for Kids will work with teens ages 12-18 to develop their personal artistic expression through use of a camera. The program will break down the learning process into weekly sessions and assignments allowing the participants to maximize their learning potential. The sessions will address visualization, selective focus, creative composition and solid basic concepts of art and photography. The participants will learn a new way of seeing along with developing a strong artistic eye. Emphasis will be placed on the use of light, space, mood and design. The program will promote strong participation and involvement of each teen.
