Camden Greenways Inc Information

We're hoping to tap into or help create a sustainability group for the city of Camden, NJ. It is welcome to those in neighboring areas of Camden County also interested in 'greening' our area - that is, making it more environmentally conscious, community based, energy-efficient, visually appealing, and healthy for all residents. The term 'green,' for those who don't know, refers to practices that endeavor to sustain nature and humanity, rather than deplete resources and degrade living conditions. 'Sustainable' is used interchangeably with 'green.' It is not affiliated with a particular political party. People in the green community are often interested in charity, recycling, organic foods, natural landscapes, global ecology and living with less waste, among other things. Green building, for example, is construction designed to be as energy-efficient as possible, utilizing air, solar, geothermal or other resources for energy and light. Conservation is also a main factor, utilizing modern technology like low-E windows, composting toilets or tankless water heaters, for example. The materials used for these projects are less environmentally and physically harmful than conventional building materials. Some materials are re-used from demolitions and materials shipped in are often from local resources to reduce transportation cost and pollution, as well as to support the local economy. Paint and decoration materials also contain zero or low toxic chemicals. Green building is not only healthier for the environment and people living there, but it also drastically reduces energy costs. With sustainable development, green design and building practices are combined with concern for the short- and long-term well being of the community. It attempts to find solutions for poverty, ecology, health, education, and other important issues. This is a really basic overview. There are many online resources on the topic(s) and we plan to provide a number of links (we've started a few on the right) on this blog for those who would like to learn more or just check out what's up on the web. What we're most interested in doing here is getting the locals together and start talking, sharing what is actually happening in the city of Camden, what is planned and what we'd like to do.
