While at Radian Corporation and under contract to the US EPA, CE Schmidt developed the US EPA recommended surface emission isolation flux chamber area source assessment technology and assisted in developing the Air Pathway Analysis (APA) approach recommended by the US EPA. As a leader in this field, he has conducted hundreds of assessments from practically every known area source including uncontrolled and controlled hazardous waste landfills, municipal landfills, many unit processes at TSDFs, hazardous and municipal wastewater treatment facilities, land application treatment facilities, fugitive emissions from a variety of industrial and agricultural processes including farms and composting, odor assessments, and urban sources such as assessing impacts from contaminated groundwater plumes in the urban environment. Typically, these data are used to support exposure assessment supporting screening-level or in-depth level health risk assessments. He has developed and uses other gas-phase, site assessment technologies including the US EPA recommended downhole flux chamber and various soil gas assessment approaches. The data collected from using these technologies, especially the surface flux chamber, provide high quality, representative area source data that go beyond the data quality provided by predictive (screening-level) modeling assessment approaches. Area source flux data, used with an appropriate dispersion model, provide for in-depth level APA that can be used to meet the needs for many project investigations. Team Members
