Growing up in Latin America and using the bus to get to school can at times be distressing. Parents are left to wonder if their child is truly on the bus, resorting to an unorganized phoning system in attempts to call up other mothers in similar positions. We have been part of this situation and have seen the anxiety of our parents not knowing whether their children are safe on their journey to school or to their homes. We know the pain - a pain which we believe should be eradicated. This lead us to build a team of recent high school graduates to work with seasoned programmers to develop BusWays. A simple and user-friendly app, BusWays can be downloaded onto a mobile device to notify parents on their child’s bus ride to and from school. Each child is provided with their own unique printable QR code that can be attached to their backpacks for easy access. Each time the child gets on or off the bus, the QR code is scanned through a device to send immediate updates to the parent’s cell phone. Through a simple notification, parents can know their child is safe. In order to make it a fool-proof system, we know that working along with the school itself is instrumental in our process. Schools are given direct access to statistics such as bus routes, average velocity, and the number of students per vehicle. With an administrative profile, schools have the ability to supervise and oversee each bus’s account. Peace of mind of the parents is only a few taps away.
