The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) provides economic analysis, research and statistics on infrastructure, transport and regional development issues to inform Australian Government policy development and wider community understanding. BITRE is part of the Policy and Research Division of the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development. BITRE holds unique aviation, maritime, road and rail transport data collections which are made available in a number of publication series. BITRE also publishes the results of individual research projects. Most BITRE publications are made available on this website. BITRE employs about 30 staff, comprising economists, statisticians, modellers, social researchers and policy analysts. The Bureau of Transport Economics was established by Cabinet in 1970. Its role was to gather and analyse information about the transport industry and transport services.
