BrightHaven was founded by Gail Pope more than 30 years ago as a living sanctuary and hospice for senior, chronically ill, disabled, and special needs animals. For nearly three decades, more than 700 animal teachers passed through those doors — and in caring for each of them, a philosophy was born. The sanctuary closed its physical location in 2018, and a small cat rescue continues operating in the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, BrightHaven's mission lives on through education — ensuring that the wisdom earned during the sanctuary years continues to guide compassionate care for animals everywhere. BrightHaven's educational work reaches pet parents and professionals through BrightHaven Caregiver Academy, co-founded by Gail Pope and Karen Wylie, EdD. Together they develop courses, tools, and resources for pet parents navigating chronic illness, palliative care, and end-of-life decisions — and for the veterinary and animal care professionals who serve them.
