Brian McGarry has been involved in the interior design business for over thirty years. Over that time he has managed retail stores and wholesale showrooms; he has represented and promoted international manufacturers and well as local entrepreneurs. New furniture, window treatments, floor coverings, reupholstry, painting; all of these experiences and responsibilities added further knowledge of the products and possibilities available for renovation and decoration. Experience you can take advantage of for your own redesign projects. Always an ardent home cook, the last twenty years have seen him find his real passion in kitchen and bath design. When involved closely with renovation it becomes apparent what is simple to and what is difficult to change. Planning any project starts with a view of Occam's Razor: the simplest way to achieve the end result is often the best way. The design has to begin with how and when the home is constructed; what are the bones of the space and how can we best utilize the present utility locations. The dimensions of the space along with door locations and traffic areas give us the realities. It is then up to us to see the possibilities inherent in those realities. There are ways that tasks are performed easily and efficiently; the concept is to set up the room so that they proceed that way. It is all about planning.
