Karen Weaving started Petal Childhood Cancer Research (previously Ribble Valley & White Rose Ladies) over 17 years ago to raise funds specifically for research into childhood cancers for Cancer Research UK. In September 2013 Petal achieved their £1 million milestone and in April 2014 invited His Royal Highness Duke of Gloucester to a celebratory luncheon as Guest of Honour. (The Duke is President of CRUK and an Honorary Member of Petal). Petal has a small committee of 7 women volunteers - most of them also in full time employment! They organise numerous and varied events every year. The highlight and biggest fundraiser is the Annual Ball which takes place in February each year. In addition they also organize a 24 hour community event in September, which raises substantial funds. Whilst Petal's chief passion is about fundraising, they are also hugely committed to raising awareness of early diagnosis, in children and young people especially. In 2014/15 Petal raised £150,000 to fund the first 3 years of a ground breaking trial on neuroblastoma in children & young people being undertaken by CRUK's Dr Martin Elliott at St James's Hospital in Leeds. After a subsequent meeting with Dr Elliott, we are utterly convinced that this trial remains a perfect fit as recipient of Petal funds and so our 2016 goal is to raise a further £100,000 in order to fund the 4th year of this research trial.
