Bookstart has been established in Northern Ireland for 12 years, inspiring a love of reading in two generations of children and preparing them for primary school. Last year Booktrust, through the Bookstart programme, gifted more than 100,000 books to families in Northern Ireland by working closely with health visitors, nurseries, playgroups and other early years settings. In an online survey (Nov 2013) 60% of parents felt the Bookstart Treasure pack had improved communication with their child's setting about reading. Booktrust National Development Manager for Northern Ireland, Liz Canning said:We need to be supporting and encouraging parents to read with their children, because all the research has shown if a parent reads to their children every day they will be almost 12 months ahead of their age group when they start school.
