A constant search for excellence is the philosophy that has always distinguished La Rioja Alta, S.A. since 1890. An international benchmark winery, recently chosen the fourth amongst the world’s most admired brands by by Drinks International, it has been able to adapt to new trends, focusing on harmony, balance and sophistication of great wines.
The five founding families of La Rioja Alta, S.A. , located in the Railway Station district in Haro, set a demanding roadmap to develop the personality and quality in their wines, with iconic brands the likes of Gran Reserva 890, Gran Reserva 904, Viña Arana Gran Reserva, Viña Ardanza and Viña Alberdi. It is a roadmap which their descendants steadfastly follow today, while transmitting it to the other wineries that currently comprise this winemaking family: Torre de Oña in Rioja Alavesa, Áster in Ribera del Duero and Lagar de Cervera in Rías Baixas.
It represents a perfect blend of tradition and modernity pivoting on a commitment to estate-owned vineyards (today, more than 800 hectares) together with constant research, environmental and social commitments and select wine tourism experiences.
The history of Protos dates back to 1927 when 11 vine growers established the “RIBERA DE DUERO” winery, with a
progressive vision to prepare quality wines with a commitment to brand value. Ninety years later, this spirit not only lives on, but also flourishes year upon year. At Protos, we have always taken pride in our roots, using only our native variety, the Tempranillo, and in 1982 allowing our brand “RIBERA DE DUERO” to be used for the recently established Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin.
Today Protos is the leading winery in Ribera del Duero with 3 wineries in Ribera del Duero D.O. for the elaboration of our red wines, 1 in Rueda D.O. for the elaboration of our white wines & 1 in Cigales for the elaboration of our rosé wines and clients in around 100 countries, we continue our international growth with the help of a solid distributor network and in-house staff in the main international markets including the USA, UK, Germany and Asia.
