  MSc (My chief recollection is the effort involved in getting this degree at night school. At 5pm I would leave work and catch the Tube across London to the Wendy Burger next to the university, grab a cheeseburger, fries and soda and just be in time for the lecture starting at 6pm. At 9pm, after 3 hours of mathematical statistics I would leave for the long commute home to Chelmsford. It was a very hard slog for two years, but I got there in the end.)

  BSc (Chairman of MathSoc. Board member of the National Committee of the British Association Young Scientists. Chairman of the Film Society. FilmSoc was moribund and seriously in debt when my friends and I took over. It had been run by idiots who only ever showed obscure arthouse films that no-one wanted to see. We showed Dirty Harry, Last Tango in Paris and many other popular movies, made a huge profit and found time to show some good arthouse movies as well.)

  4 A levels: (I was a keen and active member of the inter-school debating society. Apart from meeting girls (St Johns was boys-only in those days) I learned skills of rhetoric that have been useful ever since. I was co-chair of the Aware Group, a group of St Johns 6th-formers helping out the local community. It opened my eyes to the reality of life around me for those less fortunate than myself.)
