As a parent, the worst feeling is not being able to protect your child. When Seabren and Whitney Reeves researched crib bumpers to protect their child, the options were concerning: Traditional bumpers were linked to SIDS and alternative crib bumpers created their own problems: Some were a thin “breathable” mesh but didn’t cushion against crib slats, while others zipped on slats, but exposed the space between where children could entangle arms and legs. They were left with the disheartening choice of doing nothing. All options caused worry and they weren’t confident that their child would sleep safely. They were compelled to invent the crib bumper solution, so parents wouldn’t have to make the same disheartening choice in safety. Their solution, the Bitzy Bumper, offer the five critical features needed for safe sleeping: breathable, cushioned, protective, collapsible and modern. Their idea fast-tracked when they entered and won 1st place in a state-wide business plan competition and received grants through the Libra Future Fund and Maine Technology Institute. The Bitzy Bumper has undergone rigorous independent safety testing, and proved by Interterk to have 30x less suffocation risk and 10x less CO2 re-breathing risk than the industry standard for low suffocation hazard risk, established by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Bitzy Bumper was selected as a JPMA Innovation Award Finalist, launched at the 2011 ABC Kids Expo and has been issued Utility Patents in the US, China, and Japan.
