The time to build the infrastructure to support human survival in space is now. Humanity is on the edge of a new frontier. The growing space economy has seen a tenfold increase in private sector funding, and is expected to generate revenue in excess of $1 trillion by 2040. New destinations in Low Earth Orbit are being developed, and humans are slated to be on Lunar and Martian surfaces within 3-10 years. But with all of this investment in engineering, hardware, and technology, very little investment is being made in health and medical sciences for humans in space. Caring for human health in space will soon be a critical issue for commercial stakeholders and others. Protecting and maintaining the health of humans in space requires a strong infrastructure of medical data and knowledge. That infrastructure does not currently exist. The time to build it is now. BioAstra, Inc. is a global, not-for-profit organization and network whose mission is to set and maintain gold-standards for understanding and caring for human health in space. By partnering with stakeholders across the globe, BioAstra seeks to rapidly translate scientific discovery into tools and applications that enhance our collective ability to provide advanced healthcare and survival far beyond planet Earth. BioAstra will work in three main focus areas. The BioAstra Research Standard will speed the pace of research and create a future for seamless collaboration. BioAstra Health and the BioAstra Endowment will translate biologic discovery into tools and applications that make it possible to provide medical care far beyond Earth. And BioAstra StarLife will engage in global outreach for public education and scientific diplomacy, building a public voice of leadership for space related human health knowledge.
