Better World Adventures Ltd was formed to provide young adults in their final years of New Zealand high school, the opportunity to travel internationally to participate in community volunteering to gain self confidence, self worth, and cultural awareness, develop an understanding of global citizenship, and to foster personal growth through charitable acts of kindness. The genesis for the formation of BWA was the rea lisation that existing opportunities for New Zealand students were extremely expensive and therefore quite exclusive. BWA was formed to offer high quality voluntourism programs at significantly lower costs, so making the global volunteering experience accessible to a greater number of students. Most providers of similar, higher priced expeditions are global companies, based in the USA, UK or Australia. Better World Adventures is fully New Zealand owned and operated, for New Zealand students. The first travelling group from Mount Maunganui College departed for Sri Lanka in December 2018 to work on projects in childcare centres, renovating community temples and spending time with two wildlife conservation projects - rehabilitating retired working elephants, and protecting endangered sea turtles. Additional programs have been developed for Nepal, India, Peru, Uganda, USA, Thailand, Vietnam and Fiji, with further adventure itineraries in the pipeline. In each case, students will combine iconic tourist experiences unique to their destination country, with volunteering on purposefully selected humanitarian, community and wildlife conservation projects.
