At Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences Area, we’re dedicated to achieving transformational, breakthrough impacts in scientific domains through the discovery and use of advanced computational methods and systems, including high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, data science, and quantum information sciences and technologies. Our organization is built on a foundation of expertise in computer hardware and software, computational science, applied mathematics, networking, and middleware services. We operate two national user facilities, the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) and Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), and conduct applied research and development in computer science, computational science, and applied mathematics, with a focus on emerging areas such as machine learning, deep learning, exascale computing, and quantum computing. By combining computer and network operations with research and development, we provide tangible benefits to scientists and their research programs, enabling them to accelerate discovery and innovation in fields such as materials science, genomics, and quantum information science. Our divisions, including Applied Math and Computational Research (AMCR), Scientific Data (SDD), NERSC, and ESnet, work together to advance computational science and support the scientific community.
