KFI er resultatet af tre fusionerede fonde og har til formål at støtte frie danske købmænd KFI i sin nuværende overordnede form blev en realitet i 1995 med fusionen mellem Købmændendes Finansieringsinstitut (1955), Instituttet for KøbmandsEtablering (1961) og Institut for Købmandsfinansiering (1971). I forbindelse med KFI’s arbejde med at fremme den frie danske købmands interesser, er der fastlagt en række kriterier for at definere den hos KFI støtteberettigede frie danske købmand. Fri: Selvstændigt ejerskab, eller evne og plan om at udvikle butikken mod selvstændigt bestemmende ejerskab. Dansk: Den frie købmands aktiviteter sker under normale omstændigheder udelukkende via fysiske butikker placeret i det geografiske Danmark. Købmand: En person, der driver mindst én fysisk butik, som primært handler med et bredt sortiment af dagligvarer. Typisk med et salgsareal på mindst 450 m2 og en årlig omsætning over 15-20 mio. kr.
