Bellerive Foundation was established by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan in 1977 Private foundation to promote conservation of the earth's natural resources and protection of all life forms and the environment. Among a wider portfolio of activities, it ran the Bellerive Rural Technology Programme in East Africa that encouraged production of fuelwood through tree-planting activities, reduction of fuelwood consumption through dissemination of fuel-saving domestic and institutional cooking systems, and education on tree and fuelwood conservation through children's programs and women's groups. The Africa programme closed around 1994 and Bellerive Foundation was merged with the Aga Khan Foundation in 2006 (see http://www.akdn.org/Content/562/).
