Bedford United Church is located in Bedford, a community within the Halifax Regional Municipality, the capital city of Nova Scotia, one of the eastern-most provinces of Canada. Bedford is a beautiful sea-side community, located on the Bedford Basin, one of the finest, natural harbours in the world. Bedford has been listed as one of the best places in Canada to live. Bedford United is a member church of the largest protestant denomination in Canada, the United Church of Canada. The United Church of Canada is a union of the original Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist churches of Canada, one that took place in 1925. Since then, it has become known around the world for its very progressive, compassionate and far reaching stands on issues of social justice and reform. But it is also a denomination rooted in a rich tradition of Biblical literacy and scholarship, committed to developing the faith and spirituality of its members, and is a partner church with many denominations around the world. The UCC is a member denomination of the World Council of Churches. Bedford United Church (BUC) is a faith community of over seven hundred families, including some two thousand people. Here you will find many of the things that you recognize from other Christian churches. We worship together in two services of worship on Sunday morning, one contemporary in style, and one more traditional to the United Church of Canada. We possess programs of Christian faith and nurture for children, youth and young adults, and for mature adults and seniors. We care for each other through a variety of ministries that keep our church community strong and compassionate. We also care for the larger world around us through a variety of programs and through partnerships with other advocacy and social justice groups. Some years ago, we began Great Harbour , a centre for Spirituality and Healing, one that functions out of our church space. We are known as a congregation of leaders, and our people are active and committed in all aspects of our local and global community life. Given that we are a large and active church family, no one here knows everyone. Most people experience our church community more personally by becoming involved in a smaller group - for learning, fellowship or service. There you can begin to meet like-minded people and to grow in your spiritual journey. Doing so is, indeed, well worthwhile!
