Becky’s Button Information

Becky’s Button is a youth‑focused UK charity (no. 1212641) working to prevent violence against women and girls (VAWG). We centre our work on prevention and practical safety measures so that feeling safe in everyday life is a right, not a privilege. Founded by Jane Houng in memory of her daughter Rebecca Dykes, we support women and girls who face heightened risk of harm, and we work with young people to challenge the attitudes and patterns that allow gender‑based violence and sexual harassment to persist, including in digital spaces. With Jane’s leadership and a global volunteer network, Becky’s Button has donated more than 8,000 free personal safety alarms to women and girls in highly vulnerable situations and delivered over 30 gender‑based violence workshops across the UK, Greece, Lebanon, Pakistan and Jordan. These actions offer immediate protection to those most at risk while building understanding of how harm starts and how it can be prevented. We place younger generations at the centre of our educational work. The Rebecca Dykes Changemaker Challenge (RDCC) invites 16–21‑year‑olds in Lebanon to examine misogyny and gender‑based harm in digital spaces, notice early warning signs and suggest realistic ways to interrupt harmful patterns before they become normal. We work towards safer communities by: 1. Providing free personal safety alarms to women and girls in high‑risk and marginalised situations. 2. Delivering workshops that help younger generations understand how gender‑based harm operate in daily life and what realistic early interventions can look like. 3. Running RDCC, which supports young people to analyse misogyny in digital settings through an intersectional lens and design responses that focus on prevention. Any university, NGO, business or individual who wants to help prevent VAWG by funding safety alarms for those most at risk, hosting workshops for young people or supporting the Changemaker Challenge, we would love to connect.
