Approaching a half-century ago, Big Mama’s Kitchen &
Catering (BMK) was launched as a part-time catering service
offering biscuits, cakes, and other soul food-inspired
classics. Operating out of Patricia “Big Mama” Barron’s home
kitchen, the family-run business was hyperlocal, heavily
reliant upon word-of-mouth, and limited in its output and
capacity.
Since these humble beginnings, BMK has become an
Omaha staple, and a must-see stop for foodies across the
country, serving soul food that aims to nourish the body
while strengthening the community.
Our catering service began over 40 years ago as a part-time home-based business in the kitchen of founder; Patricia “Big Mama” Barron. Acquiring her desire to cook for her beloved grandmother Lillie, Big Mama always wanted to own her on restaurant and in December of 2007 at the age of 62, she opened the doors of her first restaurant, “Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering” uniquely located in the cafeteria of an old school formally know as the Nebraska School for the Deaf.
In March of 2018 at the age of 76, Big Mama was called home to be with Jesus. Her legacy of good food, community and second chances will not be forgotten as her family is committed to growing and expanding the rich heritage, she created for us with the relocation of the original restaurant to the Highlander Neighborhood in January of 2020.
One of the many new businesses fueling the renaissance of downtown Opelika is Bayou Bistro. Reminiscent of old New Orleans, Bayou Bistro takes southern cuisine to a new level with classic dishes skillfully blended with cutting edge new American cuisine. The atmosphere mimics the menu, polishing up the classic with modern accents. Soft jazz and blues play in the background. The one hundred year old pressed tin ceiling and exposed brick are highlighted by a gallery wall of modern abstract art done by local artists. The service is top notch and the prices are that of an everyday neighborhood eatery. Owners Micah and Michel Martello, originally from South Louisiana, have been in the food business for the better part of their lives. Michel is an expert in front of house service and business operations. Micah is the Executive Chef and is responsible for the menu and all kitchen operations. Chef Micah is a nationally acclaimed chef. Some of his career highlights are: Chef2Chef.net Top 100 Chefs (currently ranking #25), Bon Apetit Magazine best New New Orleans restaurant 1999, Vice-President of the American Culinary Federation, World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off Winner, Three time Culinary Classic Medal Winner, AAA Four Diamond Award and has been rated by the prestigious Zagat Guide as well as many others. The house specialty is crab cakes, a sinfully rich experience. But these aren't just the usual crab cakes. Unlike others, these crab cakes are made without any breadcrumb filler. Other delights include Chef Micah's award winning smoked duck and okra gumbo and his crispy roasted semi boneless duckling. You can expect to see other restaurant concepts of the Martello's popping up in the near future in Auburn as well as Opelika. Micah and Michel plan to "raise the standard" for casual dining in Auburn-Opelika.
