Het Kennisinstituut van Medisch Specialisten adviseert en ondersteunt wetenschappelijke verenigingen van medisch specialisten bij de ontwikkeling en toepassing van kwaliteitsinstrumenten en (geïntegreerd) kwaliteitsbeleid. Een belangrijke doelstelling van het Kennisinstituut is het behouden en bundelen van kennis en expertise rondom opzet en uitvoering van kwaliteitsprojecten en –beleid voor het medisch specialistische domein. Daarnaast zijn innovatie en internationale samenwerking speerpunten van de organisatie. Het Kennisinstituut richt zich op het bevorderen van de kwaliteit en het inzichtelijk maken van de medisch-specialistische zorg in Nederland. Elke patiënt dient goede zorg te krijgen, afgestemd op de reële zorgbehoefte, verleend door die professional en in die setting die daar geschikt voor is.
