BBMRI Information

BBMRI is an extensive collaboration, funded by the European Framework Programme 7, involving fifty-two scientific groups across Europe in association with one hundred and eighty other groups with a view to exploring the possibility of coordinating European biobanking initiatives. The mission of BBMRI is to prepare and construct a European biobank infrastructure aimed at providing the technical, ethical, legal, and financial foundation to become a key resource in biomedical sciences, drug development and public health. BBMRI is composed of biobanks of different formats (collections of blood, DNA, tissue etc. , together with medical, environmental, lifestyle and follow up data) together with the necessary enabling technologies and tools to facilitate the analysis and deciphering of genes, proteins, metabolic functions and their interactions. BBMRI also aims to provide harmonised standards and databases for sample collection, storage, pre-analysis and analysis as well as providing a platform for ethical, legal and societal guidance.
