Modern School (informally Modern) is a co-educational, independent, day and boarding school in New Delhi, India. It was founded in 1920 by Lala Raghubir Singh, a prominent Delhi-based businessman and philanthropist, who desired an institution that combined the "best of ancient Indian tradition with the needs of the times."[1] It was the first private and coeducational school established in Delhi during the British Raj.[2][3] The school's first principal, Kamala Bose, was a vigorous advocate of educational reform in India.[4] Her founding vision, coupled with Lala Raghubir Singh's nationalist leanings, gave the school a liberal and indigenous character compared to British-inspired public schools, which were intended for Indian aristocracy.[5] The current principal is Dr. Vijay Datta, who succeeded Lata Vaidyanathan in 2014, and is the ninth principal of Modern School, Barakhamba Road.[6] The school motto is "Nyaymatma Balheenien Labhya," which translates to "Self-realization cannot be achieved by the weak".[7][8]

The Mission of the School is to provide the right inputs to help the children grow up into caring and sharing individuals, equipped to make the right choices in life and grow up to be responsible citizens of the country and the world. The school's motto 'Knowledge is Liberation' is the cornerstone around which the character and personality of every child is built. The Society visualises an educational system based on the four basic tenets : universal values, excellence in all things, global understanding by viewing diversity as an asset, and service to humanity. From the time of its inception, the school has excelled in academics as well as co curricular activities. Currently there are over 2500 students from varied backgrounds studying in the school. Sanskriti School is headed by Mrs. Richa Agnihotri. She took over from the second principal, Mrs. Abha Sahgal in the year 2016.
