Balibo House Trust Information

It has been half a century since the five Australian-based journalists were killed in Balibo on 16 October 1975. Their deaths remain a defining moment in Australia’s relationship with Timor-Leste, and their story continues to resonate across generations. The Balibo House Trust was established in their memory and has worked for more than two decades with the people of Balibo to support health, education and local development. We are dedicated to: * Education and skills: supporting the Balibó Five Kindergarten, partnering to build schools, skills programs at the Balibó Community Learning Centre and Balibo Womens Centre * Healthcare access: supporting the Balibo Community Dental Clinic, oral health programs in schools and the Balibo Community Health Clinic * Economic development: generating tourism and local employment through the historic Balibó Fort, Balibo Fort Hotel, Balibo Trails and Balibo Community Café * Community resilience: investing in local capability and leadership * Sustainable futures: safe and clean water projects and other sustainability measures * Heritage preservation: maintaining a permanent memorial to the Balibo Five, Roger East and the local Balibo martyrs and the Balibo Fort Veterans Museum * Cross-cultural exchange: fostering awareness of the significance of Balibó to relationships between Australia, Timor-Leste and Indonesia and building enduring community relations.
