The European Athletics Championships is the most important event for the European Athletics movement. The event is the highlight of our four-year competition programme and attracts a massive amount of interest from media, sponsors and the public. It is the shop window for athletics in Europe and when, through the media, our sport reaches its largest audience. The 2010 Championships will also represent the last time that there will be a four year gap between Championships, as, thanks to recent changes in our competition, 2012 will see the European Athletics Championships take place on a biannual basis. Around 600 written press and 200 photographers will cover the Championships for news agencies, newspapers, magazines and websites in Europe and beyond. The event will be broadcast in most European countries and in many outside Europe. In Barcelona, European Athletics will celebrate the 29th anniversary of its partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) which has been of great importance in ensuring excellent coverage of European Athletics events. The Local Organising Committee, its staff and 3200 volunteers, with the assistance of European Athletics and a large number of partners, are working hard to make the event a success. The 2010 Championships will be staged both inside and outside the stadium and plans are at an advanced stage for a number of spectacular events to take place within the city during the championships.
