Ayang Trust (estd. 2017) works towards enabling quality education and dignified livelihood for communities that are marginalized in the Northeast India. The organization is based out Majuli, a riverine island which is also a district surrounded by the mighty Brahmaputra and home to 1,70,000 people from largely tribal communities like the Mising, Deori etc. Ayang means "love" in the language of the Mising tribe. Majuli is a flood and erosion affected land. The education system has been dismal owing to geographical isolation and yearly floods among other systemic factors. Close to 75% of the population still practices subsistence agriculture, and the lack of liquid cash exacerbates problems of health and access to basic needs. At the heart of Ayang's work is The Hummingbird School which serves as a model school for our work. We believe school can be the center of social change, and, our curriculum, pedagogy, culture and space works to foster love, critical thinking, and social consciousness. Fueled by our learnings from The Hummingbird School, Ayang is working towards systemic transformation of public schools through direct interventions, and knowledge and process partnering. In our livelihood work, we work to empower and skill SHGs and youth to live a life of prosperity and have diversified livelihood sources with less risk of significant loss during disasters. Ayang also engages in other critical community welfare projects like Mental Illness Treatment and Awareness, flood relief and resilience activities etc. The work of Ayang Trust is anchored by a young team with experience and qualification across diverse fields - educators, development professionals, social workers, engineers etc.
