In 1946 Warren Avis opened the world’s first airport car rental location at Willow Run Airport, Detroit, with a total of three cars. The company grew rapidly during the '50’s through franchised and corporate-owned expansion. By now, the company operates in over 5.200 locations in 165 countries worldwide. The first location in Amsterdam, The Netherlands opened its doors in 1956. By now, with over 26 rental locations on airports as well as in the important cities, Avis is one of the leading car rental companies. In 1963, Avis introduced the award winning "We Try Harder" campaign. The tagline remains the company's objective ever since. In the year 2000, Avis became Avis Budget Group EMEA Ltd. Today 'We Try Harder' continues to be the guiding principle, at the core of everything Avis Budget Group EMEA stands for. Energy, enthusiasm, innovative industry leadership and an ethos of improvement have characterised the company for many years and will continue to do so.
