The autodrome of Imola was built in 1950 in the terrible postwar years. To resolve the problem of unemployment the institutions responded with stopgap solutions such as creating work in improvised public works. The Autodrome of Imola was in fact one of these. Although it was built in a territory which since 80 BC, in other words since the time the Roman Imola was called Forum Cornelii, had an amphitheatre where chariot races were held! The idea of the autodrome arose from another idea of four locals who were keen on motorcycle racing. These four - Alfredo Campagnoli, Graziano Golinelli, Ugo Montevecchi and Gualtiero Vighi – had thought of creating an autodrome, being inspired by the construction of the road which had been started at the end of the nineteen forties – within the sphere of those works that were considered “socially useful” – to connect the via Emila, where the Rivazza curve is now located, to the town of Codrigano, as far as the current Tosa curve. The idea of the autodrome was successfully completed thanks to the arrival of Checco Costa who later becane the organiser of important motorcycle events.
