The Pain and Nociception Group (PANG) was founded in 1983 because it was recognised that there was a lack of understanding and education on the subject of pain. The initial focus was around chronic pain and a programme of evening seminars and an annual conference was established. Since the late 80's the programme has broadened to include all aspects of pain management. Current education needs are met through a series of one or two day symposia. The Co- founders, Dr. Peter Evans (Charing Cross Hospital) and Dr. Douglas Justins (St Thomas' Hospital) are responsible for the educational content. Mrs Sara Welham manages the day-to-day affairs of the group. Currently over 2,500 past and present participants are on the attendee programme. For many years PANG has been granted an approved provider status for postgraduate education by the Royal College of Anaesthetists of Great Britain.
