Atlantic Echo is developing a remote underway sound speed profiling (SSP) system that gives marine survey and sonar operators continuous ocean sound speed data — without stopping the vessel and without over-the-side instrument deployment. High-precision sonar depends on accurate sound speed profiles, but the standard methods (CTD/SVP casts, moving vessel profilers, XBT probes) force a trade-off: stop the ship for a cast, absorb the capital and deck-space cost of an MVP, or accept the limited depth and single-use cost of an XBT. These limitations compound in high sea states and icebreaking conditions — exactly where accurate SSP matters most. Our approach is different. A compact acoustic array (1-3 m) mounted to the hull transmits pulses and analyzes echoes from natural water-column reflectors — no artificial targets, no repeated deployments. Proprietary signal processing extracts the sound speed profile from 0-30 m (1 m array) to 0-90 m (3 m array), continuously along the vessel track. Atlantic Echo is built on ocean acoustics research from Memorial University of Newfoundland, with U.S. and Canadian patent applications filed, and a tested prototype validated in tow-tank trials and ocean field testing. Based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, we are looking to connect with hydrographic survey operators, sonar systems companies, and offshore and ocean technology partners interested in co-development and pilot testing.
