AskMe: Legal Information

AskMe: Legal was created in response to a number of social issues, the primary reason being the introduction of the 2012 Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment Act. The reforms removed social welfare law from the scope of legal aid, reducing the funding that law centres rely on by over 39%. The £20 million slash to the budget left many centres with no option but to close down, leaving thousands without access to justice. Put simply, we identified a problem and aim to provide solutions that will reinstate some services reduced by legal aid reforms. The Ask Me: Legal (AML) team is made up of LLB & LPC law graduates and legal professionals. Our degrees and experience within the legal field have equipped us with extensive knowledge, a solid network and research skills, allowing us to provide information and guidance to those in need of it. Whether it be making people aware of how courts have dealt with cases similar to their own in the past, or simply referring them to an organisation that can provide more assistance. The aim of AskMe: Legal is to bridge the gap between the average citizen and the English and Welsh Legal system. Our desire is to equip and empower people with legal knowledge allowing them to confidently take the right steps to best resolve their legal issues. Another branch of our work involves running workshops and events for young aspiring Lawyers, in particular those from low socioeconomic backgrounds with high attainment levels. At a time when many young people are deterred from pursuing higher education because of the price tag attached, we want to encourage those who truly have a desire for a legal career but may be apprehensive about chasing this dream. We have worked with a number of international and regional firms.
