ASIREA is the acronym for the Association for Sustainable Development, (Identification number 3-002-114418) was created in 1987 and has 80 members, all dedicated to local environmental projects. We have been declared a PUBLIC INTEREST ORGANIZATION BY THE Costa Rican government (Executive decree No 251175). In 2011 ASIREA was recognized for its contribution to the public appreciation of the environment by the National Agronomist and Forestry Professional Organization, in 2012 it received an award from the Minister of the Environment for its contribution to agroforestry systems in the region. In 2015 ASIREA was also recognized for its contribution to local culture by the Ministry of Culture. Our main field of work is with local communities to promote reforestation with small farmers. We have extraordinary advances with fast growing species, which have made tree planting an attractive economic activity. Because of this, every year farmers plant over 85.000 trees in agroforestry systems reinvesting Environmental Payments from the Costa Rican government, creating a win-win system where not only greenhouse gas emissions are offset, but also poor farmers can earn income from the trees and crops, with technical support from the organization. Each year we try to reach out to more families, planting more trees. Mission We are an organization that promotes sustainable development by offering green products and services, promoting projects and creating political impact to be able to achieve social well being and environmental sustainability. Vision We are leaders of sustainable production, well known because of the impact we can achieve on the environment, the well-being of communities and the promotion of a new forestry culture.
